Fundraise for ABF The Soldiers' Charity at the TCS London Marathon
Find out why Camilla Start ran the London Marathon for ABF The Soldiers' Charity.
“I originally signed up for the London Marathon in April 2019 after getting overly emotional watching the runners take part in that year’s event. I’d never taken part in a marathon before and had never run that far, but the atmosphere and joy of the day was really inspiring!
“I wanted to run for a charity close to my heart. ABF The Soldiers' Charity was my first choice – having grown up in an Army family, I was aware of its important work and the incredible impact it continues to have on the lives of soldiers, veterans and families who face hardship.
“Unfortunately, Covid-19 hit about halfway through my training and my place was deferred to October 2021.
“The fundraising target was £2,000, which seemed daunting at first, however there was plenty of time to prepare for it. The team at ABF The Soldiers’ Charity was also so supportive, sharing plenty of ideas and connecting me with other members of the ‘Fundraising Army’. Highlighting the charity’s great work during the pandemic helped me to secure those extra few donations and I eventually managed to reach over £4,800 – and what was amazing was how many people kept donating long after the marathon itself was over!
“The day itself was truly unforgettable and a real once-in-a-lifetime experience. As the first in-person marathon since Covid-19, it felt extra special, and it was lovely to meet fellow charity fundraisers as I went around the course. It was also great to see the brilliant ABF The Soldiers' Charity team at the particularly tough mile 17 point!
“Getting over the Finish Line and being able to share that experience with thousands of other runners and supporters was extraordinary. The team at ABF The Soldiers' Charity worked tirelessly to get us all to that point – despite the unexpected challenges – while continuing to support beneficiaries through an incredibly difficult time. I am so proud to have played a small part in helping them to continue in their mission.”
