For the first time in soap history the London Marathon will feature in EastEnders

The 2024 TCS London Marathon will feature in iconic London-based soap EastEnders this evening (Monday 22 April).

Actors Jamie Borthwick and Emma Barton completed the 26.2 miles in a time of 6:37:06 as they took part in the event and filmed scenes for the show for tonight's episode.

The pair ran as part of a storyline that will see their characters, Jay Brown and Honey Mitchell, finish the marathon in memory of Jay’s wife, Lola, who died following a brain tumour.

Filming took place for the episode throughout Marathon Day, with scenes shot at the Start in Greenwich, Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge and as they crossed the Finish Line on The Mall. The EastEnders team also recreated the Start and Finish areas of the TCS London Marathon in scenes shot earlier in April, all of which will be seen in tonight’s show.

After completing the 26.2 miles, Jamie said: “I’m really, really tired, and very much in pain, and I’m so, so hungry.”

Meanwhile, Emma said: “I’m the opposite – I’m elated. It’s been difficult stepping in and out of character. It’s been a really emotional day.

“Most of the crowd was stopping us to say how much they love EastEnders. It hasn’t hit home yet, but it’s been a real first for the show. It’s a great feeling. The whole team has supported us and has been amazing! Lola would be proud.”

The TCS London Marathon will feature on tonight’s episode of EastEnders on BBC One at 19:30.
