Deferred Entry

The 2021 withdrawal system

The withdrawal system for the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon closed at 20:00 on Saturday 2 October.

Depending on the type of entry you had, you may be eligible to defer your entry to the 2022 TCS London Marathon.

Please read below about the different entry types and which ones could be deferred: we have split these into information for UK Entrants and International Entrants to help you find the advice you need.

The 2022 TCS London Marathon

Life doesn’t always go to plan, which is why we offer a withdrawal system should you need to cancel your entry. The withdrawal system for the 2022 TCS London Marathon will become available later next year, after the ballot results have been announced.

UK Entrants

Deferred entry from the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon

If you originally had a place in the 2019 event, deferred it to 2020 and then opted to roll it over to 2021, you will not be able to defer your place again if you are unable to take part on Sunday 3 October.

Rolled over ballot, club or stakeholder entry from the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon

If you originally had a place in the 2020 event and opted to roll this over to 2021, you were able to defer your place to the 2022 TCS London Marathon. You will need to pay the 2022 entry fee of £49 in due course to secure your place. We will email you in due course with the opportunity to pay for and secure a guaranteed entry for the 2022 TCS London Marathon on Sunday 2 October 2022.

Places through the ballot, running clubs and stakeholders in 2021

If you got your place through the ballot for the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon, or you have a guaranteed place from a running club or a stakeholder (such as a local authority, emergency services, volunteer group or another group), you could defer your place to the 2022 TCS London Marathon. You will need to pay the 2022 entry fee of £49 to secure your place. We will email you in due course with the opportunity to pay for and secure a guaranteed entry for 2022.

Places provided by a charity in 2020 or 2021

If your place was provided by a charity, it was not possible for you to defer it as the place belongs to the charity. Please contact the charity direct to discuss your options. Please note it is down to the charity’s discretion if it allows you to defer your place to a future year.

Places provided by a sponsor in 2020 or 2021

If your place was provided and due to be paid for by a sponsor, it was not possible for you to defer. Please contact the sponsor direct to discuss your options.

Back of the Pack places from 2020

If you had a free-of-charge Back of the Pack place for 2020 and subsequently opted to roll over your place to 2021, this was not eligible for deferral.

International Entrants

Places provided by International Tour Operators in 2021*

Your Tour Operator may be able to arrange for you to transfer your entry to the TCS London Marathon, but there is no guarantee of this and you must discuss your options with your Tour Operator.

*Participants from China should reach out to Wanda Sports.

Places from the 2021 international ballot

If you are an international runner and got your place through the international ballot for the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon, you could defer your place to 2022. We will email you in due course with the opportunity to pay for and secure a guaranteed entry for 2022.

Please note: if your country of origin, or the UK, would not permit you to travel to and from England at any stage from 30 August 2021 to 3 October 2021 without quarantine, you will not need to pay the 2022 entry fee.

However, if your country of origin and the UK allowed non-quarantined travel from 30 August 2021 to 3 October 2021, you will be required to pay the 2022 international entry fee of £99 (you will not be charged the £26 carbon offset fee again as you have not travelled) for the 2022 event in due course.

Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Championships

If your country of origin would not permit you to travel to England at any stage from 30 August 2021 to Sunday 3 October 2021 or if the UK government would not permit entry from your country of origin in the same time period, you could either request a full refund of your entry fee or transfer your entry to the 2023 Abbott World Marathon Majors Wanda Age Group World Championships. This event is scheduled to take place in North America in the first three months of 2023.

We will contact you by the end of October 2021 to offer you the choice of these two options, but you must have withdrawn from the 2021 event before 20:00 on Saturday 2 October to be eligible. Please note: it is not possible to defer your place to the 2022 event.
